(Hon) in Physics from this university in 1991. Since then he served as an assistant of lecturer until 1997, before he left for Australia for pursuing master program, supported by Australian Government (AusAid) Scholarship. He obtained M.Sc. degree in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics from UNSW Sydney in 2000. Not long after returning to Makassar for an appointment as a junior lecturer at his former university, he was awarded MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship from Japanese Government for pursuing Ph.D program. He then went to Japan in the same year and started his education for PhD program in Tokyo Metropolitan University. He earned the degree of Doctor of Science in 2004 and returned to Makassar for resuming his position as Hasanuddin university lecturer. Between 2004-2006, Dr. Tasrief Surungan conducted a research collaboration with Prof. Anthony G. Williams, the Director of CSSM (Center for Academic Structure of Matter), Adelaide University, for studying complex systems. During this period, Dr. Surungan regularly visited the center for carrying out the collaborative research, and produced a couple of academic papers, one of them became a milestone for his current interest research topic, the so-called Non-canonical spin glass (SG) [Bartollozzi et al, Physical Review B, 2006]. Dr. Surungan was a postdoctoral fellow ini the Intitute for Solid State Physics, Tokyo University during FY 2007. Then he returned to Makassar, since then he served as a senior lecturer in the Department of Physics Hasanuddin university.
